Banaszak Slams CDU Over Alliance Risks, Demands Clarity on Berlin Coalition Path

Grüne leader Felix Banaszak strongly rejected the warnings coming from the Union regarding a potential coalition with the Left Party (Linke) and the SPD in Berlin. He also protested the equating of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party with the Left Party.

In speaking to the “Rheinische Post,” Banaszak stated that for CSU leader Markus Söder and the Junge Union, “the standards have apparently completely shifted.” Regarding the government formation in Berlin, he criticized how the impending “cultural rupture” was being invoked and how the rightfully made statement “Never again is now” was being instrumentalized and subsequently downplayed. He emphasized that this stance does not match the “deaf silence” that supposedly emanated from the Union concerning the “breaking point in Saxony-Anhalt.” The Green politician further accused segments of the Union of merely treating the threat of a takeover by far-right extremists with indifference.

However, Banaszak asserted that anyone who equates the AfD and the Left Party in the face of a threat from genuine constitutional enemies, or who discusses political strategies “leftwards” while behind defensive walls, reveals their own “lack of orientation.” He argued that those without a compass will eventually reach a dead end, urging the Union to find its way out of this situation.

Looking at coalition formation in Berlin, he added that because he does not want to lose the option of a joint government with the SPD and the Left Party, he has a strong interest in ensuring that the outstanding questions during the Berlin coalition negotiations are reliably resolved. This includes the manner in which the coalition partners handle the commitments made during the preliminary discussions, Banaszak concluded.
