Federal Minister of Labour and SPD leader Bärbel Bas criticized Friedrich Merz (CDU)’s recent statements regarding pensions, reminding the Chancellor about commitments made within the coalition. Bas told Spiegel that “a decent pension after a lifetime of work is a matter of earning fairness”. She further noted that the federal government has established a reform commission that is currently working under high pressure to develop proposals ensuring the pension system remains stable, fair, and sustainable in the coming decades. The minister explained that, “This is our expectation for the old-age security system in this country, and people can rely on it”. Bas referenced a prior coalition agreement requiring that reform proposals from the commission be awaited before any action is taken. “I will adhere to that” Bas stated in response to Merz, who had claimed on Monday that the pension would no longer serve as a “basic security” in the future.
