SPD faction leader Matthias Miersch has announced that the Social Democratic Party (SPD) will block the energy transition reform plans proposed by Economics Minister Katherina Reiche of the CDU. Miersch criticized Reiche’s agenda, stating that it aims to erect new obstacles for wind farms by inflating the risks faced by investors. Chief among his objections is the “redispatch reserve” which Miersch warns could prove damaging to the expansion of renewables and must be removed from the draft legislation.
While acknowledging that the energy transition needs optimization, Miersch emphasized that reducing the current pace would be irresponsible. Consequently, he declared that the SPD faction would not support measures that slow down the process. The core dispute surrounds the proposed redispatch reserve: this mechanism, found in the Minister’s draft, would prevent operators of renewable facilities from receiving compensation if their power must be shut down due to local grid capacity limitations.
Broadening the scope beyond energy policy, Miersch pointed to the geopolitics and economic instability, noting that fossil fuel prices have risen sharply and citing external pressures, such as Russia’s control over gas supplies and potential disruptions to oil resources. For Miersch, the discussion is not merely about combating global warming, but about national independence and stability.
The faction leader concluded by assuring that the SPD is committed to maintaining and accelerating the energy transition, rejecting any attempts to reverse course or remain attached to the fossil fuel era. Instead, the party committed to accelerating the expansion of wind and solar power, as well as critical infrastructure like transmission grids and storage facilities.
