Germany Plans Sweeping Tax Hikes on Plastic, Sugar, and Consumption to Boost Budget Germany Plans Sweeping Tax Hikes on Plastic, Sugar, and Consumption to Boost Budget

According to sources from the federal government, the government plans to introduce both a levy on plastic and a tax on sugar. These steps represent a broader effort toward budget consolidation, a point already agreed upon by the coalition, although specific details regarding their implementation have yet to be disclosed.

This initiative is part of a wide array of other measures designed to both boost federal revenues and reduce expenditures. These include increasing efficiency through cuts to bureaucracy, reforming key social security systems-such as statutory health insurance, long-term care insurance, and pension insurance-which would involve a corresponding reduction in federal subsidies for each.

Further strengthening the budget is anticipated through increases in alcohol and tobacco taxes, the taxation of cryptocurrencies, and enhanced efforts to combat financial and tax crime.

To execute these consolidation measures, various ministries are expected to submit regulatory proposals. Legal changes implementing these policies are planned for legislation such as the 2027 Budget Accompaniment Law and several other specialized acts. Ultimately, the federal government aims to avoid making any withdrawals from its financial reserves in 2027.
