German and Ukrainian Defense Industries Deepen Cooperation to Boost Rüstung Development

Germany and Ukraine have agreed to deepen their collaboration in the security and defense sectors. Speaking after a “roundtable” event on Tuesday, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that the two nations will identify additional technology fields and flagship projects for joint research, development, and production of military equipment. This cooperation will also include systems where Ukrainian industry possesses technological and experiential advantages due to the ongoing war.

Pistorius stressed the need to intensify the exchange of combat data. According to the SPD politician, integrating technology tested on the battlefield, rather than just in a lab, is crucial, as this allows for immediate real-world testing and improvement through short development cycles.

Furthermore, Pistorius announced that the military attaché staff at the German Embassy in Kyiv will be expanded to improve the coordination of defense cooperation. He affirmed the commitment to continuing the strategic promotion of defense industrial joint ventures and further stated that Germany will continue to pursue joint procurement of military goods with other European partners to support Ukraine while also benefiting domestically. This effort will be coordinated through the Ukraine contact group.

Adding to the discussion, Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil confirmed Germany’s continued financial backing for Ukraine. He also noted that the recent elections in Hungary have paved the way for a 90-billion-euro credit through the European Union. Klingbeil emphasized that this funding must be implemented quickly, given the significant financial needs in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Economic Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) proposed creating incentives to encourage German investors to put capital into Ukrainian defense and security businesses. To facilitate this, she suggested establishing a dedicated German economic contact point for cooperation with Ukraine. Reiche explained that the idea is to build a German house in Kyiv, which would serve as a hub and anchor point for German companies. She confirmed that this concept would be discussed with colleagues at the Foreign Ministry.
