SPD Chief Confident in Coalition Stability Despite Intra-Party Friction

SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch expressed confidence that the black-and-red coalition government will continue its work as a united front, despite the internal disputes seen over recent weeks. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Miersch stated that he is certain about the stability of the governing structure, asserting that Friedrich Merz and Lars Klingbeil still maintain a dependable working relationship.

He reminded readers that all government members are acutely aware of their responsibilities. While acknowledging that periods of strain are inevitable, Miersch noted that he and Jens Spahn have engaged in heated discussions, but that they have successfully established a stable foundation of trust over the last year. This was in the context of earlier reports noting that Vice Chancellor Klingbeil had admitted to an argument with Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a meeting at Villa Borsig in mid-April.

Miersch emphasized the significant progress the coalition has achieved, listing major reforms like the €500 billion special fund, the conscription law, and joint asylum policies. He stressed that they are tackling major structural changes that previous governments struggled to manage. Although he admitted that the discourse can sometimes be highly emotional, he noted that robust debate is an unavoidable part of such crucial topics, especially given that the coalition comprises three distinct political parties.
