Wagenknecht Forms “Fundamental Values Commission” to Guide BSW’s Political Future and Influence Party Leadership

The faltering Sahra Wagenknecht alliance (BSW) is working to develop new political initiatives through a newly established Core Values Commission. A founding document, reported on by “Der Spiegel”, specifies that this group will not engage in any process of “internal party negotiations” but rather plans to guide the BSW’s programmatic development purely in an advisory capacity.

This commission is part of a larger restructuring within the BSW. Although Sahra Wagenknecht handed over the chairmanship late last year, she announced the leadership of the newly formed body, allowing her to maintain influence over the party’s direction. Wagenknecht herself described her commission as a “real joker”. She added to “Der Spiegel” that this group will help counter what she describes as “often hysterical, ideologically limited political debates in Germany” by providing well-thought-out solutions.

The commission is staffed by 13 intellectual figures, including Thilo Bode, founder of Foodwatch; author Volker Braun; and writer Daniela Dahn. The team faces limited time to produce breakthrough ideas, given that Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are scheduled to elect new state parliaments in September.
