Germany plans a significant deepening of collaboration with the United States military, aiming to integrate US personnel directly into its core military command structures. According to the “Welt”, a US Colonel, whose name has not yet been disclosed, is expected to begin working at the Army Command starting this autumn. This officer is slated for a key position as the Deputy Head of the Operations Department-the division responsible for planning deployments and preparing major military decisions-effectively placing a US officer at the heart of the German Land Forces.
The Army Command itself confirmed the development to the newspaper. A spokesperson stated that a new post will be created within the Operations Department in October 2026, specifically designated for the US Colonel. The clear objective is to enhance cooperation between Germany and the US, thereby optimizing joint operational capabilities within the NATO alliance.
While the German Armed Forces acknowledged that established exchange programs are already in place, they noted that such an intensive integration into central leadership roles is unusual. General Lieutenant Christian Freuding, Inspector of the Army, framed the move as an expansion of cooperation between both armed forces. He stated that the placement of a high-ranking US officer in the Operations Department reflects a deep, mutual trust. Freuding also noted that he maintains close professional and trusting relationships with his US counterpart, General Christopher Donahue, who serves as the Commander of US Land Forces in Europe and Africa.
The US side also emphasized the strategic dimension of the arrangement. Armies spokesman Vonnie Wright confirmed an agreement for the exchange of officers on a “highly selective basis”. The US officer will operate out of the German Army headquarters, focusing on improving interoperability to support both NATO and bilateral requirements.
