The Federal Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul (CDU), recently highlighted the crucial role that diplomacy plays in navigating the complexities of increasing international crises. Speaking during a trip to Rabat, Morocco, and appearing on the RTL program “Nachtjournal Spezial” he stated that diplomacy is the “only thing that can save us”.
According to Wadephul, diplomatic solutions are necessary in major conflicts, citing both the war in Ukraine and the ongoing tensions with Iran. He pointed to other global hotspots, such as Sudan, proving that military means alone are incapable of resolving international disputes. He stressed that resolution requires “only talks, agreements, and understanding for the other side” noting that the process of diplomacy is often painstaking and arduous-comparing it to the seemingly endless cycle of Sisyphus pushing his stone.
Looking back at his service, the CDU politician described his first year in office as both demanding and fulfilling. While he admitted it was more strenuous than he had anticipated, he found it deeply engaging. This year, he managed to visit approximately 60 countries and meet with over 120 colleagues.
