The head of the SPD youth organization, Philipp Türmer, expressed skepticism regarding the governing capacity of various segments within the CDU/CSU coalition. Speaking to the “Tagesspiegel” (Friday edition), Türmer noted that for every finger visible on the CDU representing finger pointing at the SPD, four fingers pointed back highlighted the Union’s own apparent inability to govern.
He cited specific examples of perceived policy contradictions. According to Türmer, the Union allegedly desires affordable energy prices while basing its strategy heavily on expensive gas-fired power plants. Furthermore, while claiming to want to ease the burden on workers, the Union would supposedly never consider taxing inheritors.
Tümer further likened segments of the CDU’s behavior to those of the Greens in the current governing coalition (“Ampel”). He stated that certain members refuse to acknowledge necessary reforms if those requirements conflict with their own ideologies. In his view, this fixation on dogma disregards logic, causing the coalition and decision-making capabilities to suffer. He asserted that the core problem is not merely a crisis of the governing coalition, but rather a systemic crisis within the Union itself, where wide parts of the party seem to have lost their way between opposition strategy and governance reality.
Adding to the mounting pressure, Christian von Stetten, a CDU parliamentarian and chair of the SME parliamentary group, recently suggested that the current governing arrangement (“Schwarz-Rot”) would not last for four years, stating, “At least not four years-absolutely not”. He implied that the current situation might only sustain for three or four months before disagreements could undermine the reform efforts. Meanwhile, reports cited by “Bild” indicate that discussions about an early end to the coalition have begun within prominent Union circles. Within the Union, there is reportedly growing frustration over what has been observed as a widespread reluctance toward necessary reforms, pointing to palpable tension with the SPD.
