Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil of the SPD has dismissed speculation that the “black-red” governing coalition might dissolve before its four-year term is up. Speaking to RTL and ntv near a May demonstration in Bergkamen, Klingbeil stated that the democratic center is in a “damn duty” to make things work in the country. He emphasized that achieving this requires considerable effort and a willingness to make compromises, arguing that people should not expect others to contribute only 100 percent of themselves.
The SPD chairman stated that he could not confirm reports that members of the coalition are only fighting for their individual interests. He assured that it is completely normal for differing opinions to exist when discussing political topics in a democracy, pointing out the difference in affiliation between politician Friedrich Merz (CDU) and himself (SPD). “You can’t even expect us to start with the exact same position” he noted.
According to Klingbeil, crucial decisions-such as those concerning the budget and healthcare reform-are made through joint cabinet resolutions. “We get decisions done in the cabinet; we have made major decisions-and we need that more now”. He concluded by confirming that he and Merz are in daily contact and understand the immense responsibility they bear for the country. “Friedrich Merz and I are equally convinced that we want to move this forward together”.
