Jens Spahn (CDU) has been confirmed as the head of the Bundestag parliamentary group for the Union parties. Reports indicate that during the regular re-election held on Tuesday, Spahn received an approval rate of 86.5 percent, without facing any competing candidates. This confirmation means he is expected to remain in the role until the end of the current legislative period, as he will not need to stand for re-election under normal circumstances until 2029.
While he was initially elected as CDU/CSU parliamentary group leader one year ago with 91.3 percent, the figures for the Union generally do not include abstentions, differing from many other German parties.
Speaking before the session began on Tuesday, Spahn emphasized the party’s core mission: “We want, we must, we are obligated to solve the problems we have within the political center, within this coalition”. He stressed that he works “every day” to maintain the coalition’s cohesion throughout the coming three years. According to Spahn, the current most important task is restoring confidence and addressing the prevailing bad mood caused by the lack of visible perspective.
