Election Rhetoric: How a Former Regime Official Plans to Reinvigorate Democracies in Eastern Germany

Evelyn Zupke, the re-elected Bundestag representative for victims of the SED regime, stated her intention to educate voters in Eastern Germany on the value of democracy. According to Zupke, surveys indicate that over half of the population in the region is dissatisfied and believes they do not live in a democracy. Viewing this as part of her duty, she plans to clearly highlight the difference between the authoritarian rule of the SED in the past and the democratic reality today. This message is critical for the upcoming elections as well.

“We do not live in a dictatorship; we live in a democracy-despite all the problems that need to be discussed” Zupke affirmed. She directed this statement not only at the AfD, but also at other parties such as the BSW or The Left, which she suggests have historically, or still hold, such tendencies, stating that the problem spans all extremist directions. When discussing the elections, the focus naturally remains on the AfD, according to the SED representative.

Currently, new state parliaments are being elected in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Saxony-Anhalt in September, regions where the AfD currently holds a significant lead in the polls.
