Mileage for toll-paying heavy goods vehicles with at least four axles on German autobahns decreased by 0.7% in April 2026 compared to March 2026, after adjustments for time of year and season.
According to reports issued by the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Friday, the calendar-adjusted truck toll mileage index was 0.8% below the level recorded in April 2025.
The connection between economic activity and transportation services is strong, as industrial output requires and generates traffic volume. Therefore, the truck toll mileage index is closely linked to indices tracking overall economic activity, particularly industrial production. Because this index becomes available about a month earlier than production indices, it is useful as a leading indicator for gauging economic trends. However, Destatis noted that it is not possible to break down this data by specific economic sectors.
