SPD politician Bärbel Bas suggests that structural reforms could uncover savings potential within the social budget regarding pensions. However, she emphasized that any changes to the retirement benefit starting at age 63 must be carefully considered through the lens of social equity.
Speaking to RTL and ntv, Bas pointed to the pension commission, which is due to present its findings in June. She noted that since people’s lifespans are increasing, the system must be made sustainable, particularly ensuring stability for the younger generation who are just beginning their careers.
Reflecting on life expectancy, Bas cautioned that policymakers must consider variations between different income brackets. She mentioned that the life expectancy has even decreased for low-income earners. Nevertheless, she stressed that since people from higher-income classes are the primary users of the pension benefit at age 63, this component must also be integrated into any reforms. Bas concluded by stating that if a comprehensive package is developed, it will certainly become a subject of discussion.
