17-Year-Old Detained in Hamburg on Suspected Plot for Explosive Terror Attack

The public prosecutor’s office in Hamburg announced the arrest of a man suspected of planning a terrorist attack. The detainee is reported to be a 17-year-old Syrian national who allegedly planned a bombing. He was believed to target an undetermined number of people at locations such as a shopping center, a bar, or a police station in Hamburg. To execute the attack, he reportedly procured materials including universal fertilizer, liquid grill lighter fluid, a storm hood, and a knife.

Special police forces apprehended the suspect in Hamburg last Thursday. According to officials, a search of his residence led to the seizure of items intended for the planned attack. Investigators believe that the young man was inspired by the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) for his scheme.

Adding to the complexity of the case, reports indicate that the authorities were previously aware of the suspect, as he had shown suspicious behavior within groups on the Telegram messaging service. Furthermore, the Federal Intelligence Service reportedly received tips regarding his plans early last week. Beyond the terror plot, the 17-year-old is also under investigation for using symbols associated with IS. In a related matter, the General State Prosecutor’s Office has ordered a psychiatric evaluation for the suspect regarding suspected violations of the association law and other related offenses.
