Federal prosecutors arrested an Iraqi national in the Barnim district of Brandenburg this Thursday, utilizing officers from the Federal Criminal Police Office and the Federal Police. According to the Federal Prosecutor General, the suspect is highly suspected of attempting to establish a terrorist organization. Additionally, he is accused of preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state and violating weapons law.
The arrest warrant specified that the Iraqi citizen adheres to the radical-Islamic ideology of the foreign terrorist group, “Islamic State” (IS). According to the court documents, he planned to carry out attacks in Germany against individuals he considers non-believers in the spring of 2025, along with other people. To this end, he had reportedly acquired a firearm and scouted a church in Bremen, which he intended to be the group’s first target. It was also stated that the suspect recruited an as-yet-unidentified individual for his plans, although the recruitment of further persons failed.
The suspect was presented to the investigative judge of the Federal Court of Justice on Thursday, who opened the arrest warrant and ordered his detention.
