Olaf Lies, the Minister-President of Lower Saxony and member of the SPD, has addressed the current political turmoil, calling for a coordinated strategy involving the government at the federal level, individual states, unions, and employers.
speaking to the “Tagesspiegel”, Lies noted that “people perceive that the federal government is having difficulty making necessary decisions”. He criticized the constant back-and-forth criticism between the Union and the SPD, arguing that a shared approach is urgently required. “The challenges are too big for petty squabbles. We have much more than just a collection of individual problems; we have a crisis. In a time like this, we must act differently” he asserted.
While acknowledging the immense pressure faced by those in leadership roles within federal politics, Lies stated that all key players are simultaneously party chairpersons, meaning no one can escape the measurement of poll numbers. He expressed a desire for a renewed sense of respect for the federal government from responsible members of society. He emphasized that this respect must be earned.
However, he cautioned against continuous opposition, stating that endlessly dissecting issues and exploiting every opportunity to question the government is unhelpful. Though he understood the appeal of being featured in the press, Lies concluded by asking that everyone “tone down the criticisms” and temper their rhetoric.
