Right-Wing Gains Lead to Record Low Approval for German Coalition According to YouGov Survey

According to a new Yougov poll, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is rising, reaching 28% of the vote, which increases the gap between them and the Union by six points. If the Bundestag elections were scheduled for Sunday, the combined CDU and CSU bloc would receive 22% of the vote, which is one percentage point lower than the previous Yougov poll conducted in mid-April. Meanwhile, the AfD has gained one point.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) remains stable at 13%, and the Greens are also polled at 13%, though this marks a one-point decline from a month prior. The Left Party (Die Linke) managed to gain one point, reaching 11%. The remaining parties’ results remained consistent: BSW and the FDP each polled at 4%, and the smaller represented parties remained at 5%.

The broader results indicate that citizen satisfaction with the federal government is low. In May, only 16% of the German public reported being satisfied with their work, compared to 19% in April. Furthermore, 67% believe the coalition is poorly coordinated, while only 10% feel it works well. Fifteen percent of respondents believe the working relationship is neither particularly good nor poor, and 8% were undecided.

Friedrich Merz’s approval rating has declined compared to April. Currently, 15% assess Friedrich Merz’s performance as good, a drop of 5 percentage points. Concurrently, 81% believe he performs poorly, which is a six-point increase from the previous month. Merz lost approval ratings particularly among voters aligned with the Union (who rate him good at 38%, down 8 points from April) and among SPD voters (16% rate him good, down 8 points from April).

Regarding cooperation, all other parties represented in the Bundestag ruled out forming coalitions with the AfD, both nationally and regionally. The public opinion on this issue is split: 46% believe this action is correct, 41% believe it is wrong, and 13% are undecided.

The Yougov poll, which conducted its survey from May 8th to 11th, questioned a total of 2,179 individuals.
