Roth Criticizes Boycotts, Defending Eurovision as a Platform for European Diversity and Progressive Messages

Claudia Roth, the former Minister of Culture for the Green Party, has criticized the decision by five countries to boycott the Eurovision Song Contest due to Israel’s participation. She argued that the contest is fundamentally a “unique festival of diversity” and provides a platform, especially for the queer community and the cultural breadth of Europe and beyond, making a boycott inappropriate.

Roth emphasized that the Israeli artists who participate in the ESC have consistently represented a progressive vision of Israel. As examples, she cited Dana International, who won in 1998 with “Diva” and Netta Barzilai, the 2018 ESC winner. According to Roth, these artists stand up for a diverse and pluralistic Israel, opposing both Netanyahu’s government and its policies which they deem violations of international law.

Roth also expressed disappointment that countries like Ireland, which has a history of creating unforgettable performances at the contest, are choosing to withdraw. However, she added that political messages can still be successfully conveyed through the event. She pointed to instances such as Conchita Wurst from Austria and Ukraine, who reportedly won the competition after the Russian invasion, demonstrating the contest’s capacity for political statements.
