Calling for a ban on the AfD party, Verdi’s head Frank Werneke stated that the party’s proposed plans-particularly those concerning civil servants in Saxony-Anhalt-show that the AfD aims for a sweeping overhaul of the state. According to Werneke, the AfD’s statements confirm their intent for a fundamental restructuring of the government apparatus. He referred specifically to remarks made by AfD top candidate Ulrich Siegmund in Saxony-Anhalt, who had announced plans to fill between 150 and 200 civil service positions if the party were to gain power in the state.
Werneke alleges that the AfD is planning a politically motivated transformation of state authorities. Speaking to the Funke media group, he stated that civil servants committed to the Basic Law and democratic principles would be replaced by what he described as “right-wing extremist followers”. In his assessment, this proves to him that the AfD poses a genuine threat to the continuation of democracy, making it “high time to initiate a banning procedure against the AfD before the Federal Constitutional Court”.
The labor union Verdi, which represents numerous employees in the public sector, has previously supported Werneke’s call for preparing a ban procedure against the AfD, a stance he reiterated this year.
