Matthias Miersch, the leader of the SPD faction in the German Bundestag, stated that the democracy in Germany is at risk due to the growing influence of the AfD party. Speaking to the television channel “Welt” on Monday, Miersch described the situation as unprecedented in the Federal Republic, claiming that democracy is under massive pressure, a trend he sees escalating in other nations.
Miersch echoed the warnings issued by Thuringia’s Interior Minister, Georg Maier (SPD). Maier had previously cautioned about potential risks to the nation’s security framework should the AfD win in Saxony-Anhalt. Specifically, Maier highlighted that the situation becomes particularly sensitive when the AfD is granted roles on committees dealing with constitutional protection. Miersch pointed out that this access creates the danger that sensitive information could be leaked to the very groups that are supposed to be monitored. Consequently, he argued, the public discussion must now focus heavily on assessing the resilience of key governmental bodies and judicial institutions.
In a separate appeal, Miersch urged citizens to recognize the seriousness of what is at stake. While acknowledging that Germany has its flaws, he stressed that many people worldwide would genuinely wish to live in the country. Because of this, he expressed hope that the democratic forces will ultimately prevail in this ongoing debate.
