Both the Left Party faction and the Association of Taxpayers are demanding the complete abolition of the automatic increases for parliamentary allowances for members of the German Bundestag.
Heidi Reichinnek, the leader of the Left faction, stated that pausing the increase this year is merely a preliminary measure. She argued that the automatic system itself is fundamentally flawed and must be scrapped entirely, noting that it was faulty even when first introduced. She conveyed the view that a reduction in the allowances would be a far more appropriate course of action.
Echoing this sentiment, Reiner Holznagel, the president of the Taxpayers Association, voiced his frustration, stating that the automatic elevation of these allowances causes controversy every year. He asserted that the mechanism-which ties lawmakers’ paychecks to the general wage development of the workforce-should be scrapped. Holznagel also pointed out that any increase not only raises allowances but also has implications for pension entitlements. He criticized that many parliamentarians continue to enjoy privileges that are no longer considered timely.
Since 2014, the Bundestag has operated under a mechanism that automatically adjusts member allowances annually based on the general wage growth rate in Germany. Under the current scheme, parliamentarians’ allowances were scheduled to automatically increase on July 1st to around 12,330 euros, up from 497 euros. However, this planned escalation appears unlikely to proceed, following pressure exerted by various parliamentary factions, including the Union party, which signaled its willingness to forgo the raise given the general economic and political climate. Although a formal parliamentary resolution is still required to confirm this pause.
Reichinnek sharply criticized the Union’s last-minute change of heart. She called it embarrassing that massive public pressure was needed for even the Union to voice discomfort about the nearly 500-euro planned allowance hike. She highlighted a perceived irony, noting that while the ruling coalition constantly calls for citizens to work harder and make more sacrifices, the shame apparently only struck after the lawmakers’ paychecks were set to increase automatically.
