Advocating for New Burden Sharing and EU Focus with Ukraine Support

Ahead of his departure for the NATO Foreign Ministers meeting in Helsingborg, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) advocated for a revised structure for burden-sharing within the defense alliance. Speaking on Thursday, he stated that as European capabilities continue to increase, the roles and responsibilities within the alliance must evolve. He declared that the goal must be a new distribution model that accurately reflects both Germany’s and Europe’s economic and military potential.

He emphasized that within the European pillar of NATO, it is crucial to prioritize those aspects that provide the greatest security benefit for Europe. According to the Foreign Minister, Ukraine has played the most significant role in securing European safety outside the alliance over the past four years, due to its heroic struggle against Russia’s invasion. Wadephul announced his intention to make specific proposals in Sweden concerning how to further robustly support Ukraine’s defense of freedom and how international cooperation can benefit from the nation’s impressive achievements in the arms industry.

The agenda in Helsingborg will also include focusing on the security situation in the Middle East. The CDU politician highlighted that collective efforts with regional nations aim to ensure the free, safe, and unimpeded passage of all vessels, thereby guaranteeing the reliable supply of goods worldwide. To this end, Germany affirmed its readiness, alongside more than 30 other countries, to actively contribute to international efforts dedicated to securing the Strait of Hormuz.
