SPD leader and Federal Minister of Finance Lars Klingbeil has signaled his party’s strong willingness to reach compromises during the upcoming coalition negotiations concerning the reform process. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” Klingbeil addressed the massive tasks ahead, stating that the federal government is working diligently to advance necessary reforms. He emphasized that achieving this requires consensus in the political center, asserting, “We are ready to approach each other and overcome the blockades in our country”. While acknowledging that not everything will be successful immediately, he expressed confidence in the nation’s ability to navigate difficult periods collaboratively, betting that current efforts will yield positive results in the coming years and decades.
For the SPD, fairness is the critical measure of success. “That is the benchmark” Klingbeil stressed. “Reforms will only be successful if they are fair. We must strengthen cohesion, not weaken it”. He highlighted the importance of involving both unions and employer associations in the reform process to find solutions that have wide support.
Looking toward future economic policy, Klingbeil stated his key priority is ensuring that work is more rewarding and that more of an individual’s salary remains after expenses in these uncertain times. Consequently, he proposed reforming the tax system to alleviate the burden on people with small and medium incomes, as well as on craftspeople and small businesses. Furthermore, the government aims to strengthen the economy, secure jobs, and reduce bureaucracy. He also committed to ensuring that social systems remain reliable for the future. Crucially, however, Klingbeil noted that achieving these goals requires simultaneously managing the budget effectively to ensure future policy flexibility, addressing criticism regarding planned savings in the federal budget.
