SC Freiburg has signed goalkeeper Mio Backhaus from Werder Bremen, a move the club announced on Saturday. SC board member Jochen Saier commented that Backhaus has impressively demonstrated during his first Bundesliga season that he can perform at a high level, adding that his calm and concentrated attitude is infectious. Saier also noted that he excels in all facets of goalkeeping, possesses significant development potential, and would be a good cultural fit for the team. He concluded by saying that Backhaus will help SC Freiburg maintain a strong trio of goalkeepers in the future.
Mio Backhaus himself stated, “A door has opened, and I feel like I fit right through it. The overall package-the people I spoke with here, the city, the stadium, and the style of football played in Freiburg-led to this decision. I want to achieve something with the team and am excited about the Sport-Club”.
The German-Japanese keeper started his youth career at Kawasaki Frontale and moved to Germany at the age of 14 to play for Alemannia Aachen. He then progressed to the Werder Bremen youth academy. After nine appearances for Bremen’s second team, Mio Backhaus was loaned to Dutch Eredivisie club FC Volendam for the 2023/24 season, where he served as the starting goalkeeper for 33 games.
Upon returning to Werder, he made his Bundesliga debut in August 2025 and has since featured in 32 league matches for the Green-Whites. The 22-year-old has progressed through all German youth national teams, starting from the U15 level, and currently represents the German U21 national team.
