Iranian Conflict Not Seen as Direct Threat to World Cup Security, Says German Interior Minister

According to Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, the current war in Iran does not present a specific threat to fan gatherings related to the upcoming Football World Cup in Germany. Speaking to the newspapers of the Funke media group, the CSU politician stated that Germany remains a safe country and that all efforts will be made to ensure that large events-whether fan festivals or the Oktoberfest-remain secure. He added that while the developments stemming from the Iranian conflict are being closely monitored regarding individual persons and extremist groups, there is currently no reason to escalate the threat level from abstract concern to a concrete danger. However, Dobrindt acknowledged that the situation “can change every day”.

Regarding the geopolitical context, the minister emphasized the importance of continuing border controls. Given the international situation, he stressed the commitment to keeping this instrument functional. He noted that 35,000 people have been rejected at German borders so far, contributing significantly to Europe’s success in curbing illegal migration. Furthermore, he pointed out that these border controls have led to the arrest of nearly 9,000 individuals with outstanding warrants, as well as over 1,400 smugglers.

On the topic of the World Cup, Dobrindt expressed skepticism about whether the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico could result in a fundamental shift in German sentiment. While admitting it would be welcome, he suggested that an unsuccessful team would contribute less to improving public mood than a successful one. He advised the national team to focus more on the sport and less on politics, subtly referencing the previous tournament in Qatar and the controversy surrounding the wearing of the rainbow ribbon. Despite his caveats, Dobrindt expressed confidence in the team’s performance, stating that he anticipates the German national team will reach the final.
