Ebola Epidemic Escalates in DRC with Over 900 Suspected Cases Amid Conflict and Instability

The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, reported that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has now resulted in over 900 suspected cases, including 101 confirmed cases.

The outbreak’s epicenter is the Ituri province, an area where nearly five million people reside amidst ongoing conflict. The WHO chief highlighted the severe humanitarian situation on the ground, noting that one in four people requires humanitarian assistance and one in five are internally displaced. The violence is forcing residents to flee their homes, even leading to the displacement of health and humanitarian aid workers. This turmoil significantly hampers efforts to trace Ebola contacts and detect infections early enough to provide necessary supportive care. Furthermore, the persistent uncertainty and fear are fueling distrust among the local population.

In addition to the DRC, the neighboring country of Uganda has also been affected by the current outbreak. In response, the WHO declared an international health emergency a week ago, followed shortly by the African Union’s health authority, which also declared a continental emergency.
