In light of the upcoming trial against former transport minister Andreas Scheuer of the CSU, the Green Party is demanding that his party address the toll tax scandal. Irene Mihalic, the parliamentary director for the Greens, told Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland that the former CSU minister Scheuer inflicted significant damage on the country, an issue the CSU has not adequately dealt with to this day. Mihalic emphasized that the party had supported Scheuer’s toll policy at the time and had even included it in their programming.
Mihalic added that it was positive that the Berlin Regional Court is now clarifying whether Andreas Scheuer gave false testimony before the parliamentary inquiry committee. This, she stated, highlights the importance of parliamentary investigative committees and the fact that witnesses under these committees are bound by a duty of truthfulness.
The Berlin Regional Court announced on Friday that it permits an indictment against Scheuer on suspicion of providing false testimony during the Bundestag’s inquiry into the toll tax. Former State Secretary Gerhard Schulz is also co-accused in the case. However, the former CSU minister has denied the accusations.
