Sebastian Fiedler, the SPD parliamentary spokesperson for domestic policy, has called for an end to the debate surrounding the inclusion of civil servants in the statutory pension insurance. In doing so, he contradicted Bärbel Bas, the SPD leader and Federal Minister of Labour.
Speaking to Focus, Fiedler stated that the essential aspects of this discussion are often misunderstood or deliberately concealed. He firmly asserted that the principles of the civil service, which are enshrined in the Basic Law, must under no circumstances be put up for negotiation or compromise.
In his view, the principles of life-time tenure and sustenance are fundamentally important for the functioning of the state. According to Fiedler, these principles obligate the employer-which is the state-to guarantee a lifelong and adequate living standard for both the civil servants and their families, both during and after their service, in proportion to the importance of their position. He emphasized that this arrangement is not merely a privilege, but a constitutional requirement for an independent, functional, and rule-of-law public sector that operates without bias.
