The Social Democratic Party (SPD) proposes integrating disaster management and civil protection into the German school curriculum. Esra Limbacher, the SPD’s vice-faction leader, told the “Rheinische Post” that such a course could spark enthusiasm for volunteering while simultaneously boosting the overall resilience of society.
Limbacher emphasized that disaster protection in Germany plays a crucial role in safeguarding against flooding and severe high-rainfall events, noting that the probability of such dangerous weather phenomena is increasing. She argued that sharpening students’ awareness regarding these situations is a necessary step. Furthermore, students would gain better insight into the critical work performed by fire departments, rescue services, and aid organizations, potentially leading to their own future involvement.
This initiative follows previous efforts by Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), who recently advocated for including the topic of civil defense in the educational framework when introducing his own civil protection plans. The subject is currently scheduled for discussion at the next Interior Ministers Conference in mid-June.
