Dirk Wiese, the SPD Parliamentary Manager, has sharply rejected the demand from family business leader Marie-Christine Ostermann to abolish the parliamentary summer break. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post,” Wiese commented that Frau Ostermann should know that neither the government nor the political factions supporting it cease working during the summer pause. He characterized her suggestion as being based on an unfortunate lack of awareness.
Wiese explained that even during these so-called summer breaks, cabinet meetings still take place where crucial decisions are made. Furthermore, specialized politicians gather for reports and discussions, faction working groups convene, closed-door seminars are held, and committees remain capable of holding extraordinary sessions at any time.
The SPD politician stressed that this ensures the legislative process does not stall in the summer, contrary to what has been suggested. Instead, he asserted that work continues to drive important decisions forward. Ostermann had initially called for suspending the summer break with the goal of accelerating the political reform process.
