Following the recent elections in Saxony-Anhalt, Philipp Türmer, head of the Juso party, is demanding an immediate change in direction from the ruling coalition. Speaking to the Handelsblatt, Türmer stated that the election served as a reckoning with the federal government, particularly criticizing the current reform agenda. He called for a complete reversal in Berlin’s political efforts.
Türmer was equally critical of his own party, stating that witnessing such significant trust losses among the core electorate required the SPD to acknowledge its failures. “If we are experiencing such severe loss of confidence among our core clientele, we must also admit: we have done a great deal of things wrong,” the Juso leader remarked in reference to the SPD’s 9.3 percent electoral result. He argued that it is impossible to forcefully implement a reform agenda that goes against the will of the people. Instead, those in power must listen to citizens, meaning real change must now occur.
He insisted that the practice of equating reform with austerity cuts must stop. Instead, he argued that “genuine reforms” should be introduced-changes that make the system fairer. As an example, Türmer highlighted a possible pension reform: one that strengthens smaller pension incomes while slightly reducing very high benefits, all within a unified state pension system accessible to everyone. Although he could detail his specific ideas on how to achieve this change, he noted that the party currently lacks a cohesive strategy, which must be rectified.
Türmer deliberately avoided escalating the ongoing debate regarding the potential replacement of party leaders Lars Klingbeil and Bärbel Bas. His current focus is on the immediate coming weeks and the substantive issues that have arisen in the wake of the Saxony-Anhalt elections.
