Biontech Restructures, Intensifying mRNA Focus While Spinning Off Early Assets

According to reports cited by the newspaper “Handelsblatt”, Biontech intends to continue its focus on mRNA technology. Following the departure of its founders, the Mainz-based biotech company has made several strategic decisions. Among these plans is the continued advancement of the iNEST cancer research project. However, a portion of its early research-specifically the CAR-T cell therapy portfolio and research into RiboMAB-is slated to transition to the founders’ new venture, along with associated personnel. Company sources indicate that approximately 300 employees are involved in this transition, though the exact number may fluctuate depending on ongoing negotiations. Further maneuvers are anticipated, as Biontech is also considering establishing an additional company. The company plans to sell early drug candidates designed for inflammatory diseases, which were acquired from the Chinese biotech firm Biotheus. Furthermore, Biontech has reportedly already begun discussions with life-science venture capital investors.
