The Green Party is sharply criticizing the federal government over the failure of the German-French FCAS combat aircraft project. According to party leader Franziska Brantner, the government in Berlin points to the resistance of the involved industries. However, Brantner argued that this reveals the real failure: when industry puts up barriers, it is the responsibility of politics to provide leadership and enforce decisions. The Green party chair further stated that the failure to achieve both a Franco-German consensus and a viable industrial model constitutes a serious setback for European security and defense policy in an increasingly dangerous world. “If things go poorly, we won’t have a modern European fighter jet, or perhaps only one equipped with an American engine. That is negligent.”
