Green Party Backs Electricity Tax Cut, Urges Broader Action Against Cost of Living Crisis

The leader of The Left, Luigi Pantisano, welcomed the demand made by the Conference of Prime Ministers (MPK) for a general reduction in electricity taxes. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, he stated that the affordability crisis has finally reached the prime ministers and that lowering the electricity tax would constitute a proper and overdue step.

However, Pantisano warned that the Merz government itself actively fuels the affordability crisis. He strongly pressed for an end to cuts aimed at the social state. In addition to the tax reduction, Pantisano called for comprehensive measures to tackle the rental housing crisis, the implementation of a profit margin cap for mineral oil corporations, and the reinstatement of the 9-euro ticket.

He argued that the financial leeway necessary to implement these demands exists only if “those huge fortunes and corporations are finally taxed properly.” This stance follows the MPK’s call on Thursday for a rapid decrease in electricity taxes for everyone, as well as its demand for an early proposal regarding the promised fuel price cap.
