A survey conducted by the Association of Municipal Companies (VKU), and reported on by the Funke media group, reveals that four out of ten municipal energy companies are currently working on battery storage projects.
Overall, 76 percent of the surveyed companies are engaged with battery storage, with 27 percent in the planning phase, 11 percent already implementing projects, and the remaining 46 percent actively exploring these storage solutions. Only 16 percent of the companies reported having no current interest in storage systems.
Regarding the scope of these projects, about a third of the planned or begun projects fall into the 1 to 5 Megawatt range, while another third is sized between 5 and 10 Megawatts. Furthermore, 23 percent of the projects are expected to have a capacity between 10 and 100 Megawatts, and only a small fraction (7 percent) are projected to exceed that capacity.
The VKU, which organizes various municipal energy providers in Germany, collected data from 159 company representatives between April 21 and May 22. The results show that battery storage is considered highly relevant within the industry. Specifically, 35 percent of respondents stated the topic holds a “high” or “very high” importance for their company, and another 35 percent placed it in the medium category. In contrast, 24 percent cited low importance, while 4 percent indicated that battery storage plays no role whatsoever in their operations. Two percent were unable to provide a definitive answer.
