German Trucking Volumes Rise Indicating Upward Trend in Economic Activity

The traffic volume for toll-paying heavy trucks with a minimum of four axles on federal motorways rose by 1.6 percent in May 2026 compared to the previous month. Furthermore, the calendar-adjusted truck toll performance index saw an increase of 1.8 percent when compared to the same month last year, according to the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), who released the data on Tuesday. The authorities believe that highway truck traffic provides early insights into the current economic trends within the industry. Statisticians note that there is a clear connection between the truck toll traffic index and indices reflecting economic activity, particularly the manufacturing production index, because overall economic activity generates and requires transportation services.
