After the meeting between coalition leaders and social partners, Heidi Reichinnek, the leader of the Left faction, launched fierce criticism against Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU). Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, she noted that the widespread media attention accompanying Merz’s meetings with union presidents-who represent the working population-is highly telling. Reichinnek argued that he has been championing laws for months that severely harm exactly these workers. She maintained that a chancellor engaging with unions and social organizations should be a routine practice, not a mere spectacle.
Reichinnek further asserted that Merz’s goal is simply to secure support for a policy direction that has already been decided. “The input is simulated to achieve approval for his agenda of social austerity,” she explained, adding that if the unions then veto the plans, “they are the ones unwilling to make compromises.”
However, she stressed that there can be no compromises when discussions involve crucial topics such as a sound healthcare system, wages and pensions that are sufficient to live on, and occupational safety. Reichinnek concluded by stating, “There is a path for the people in this country and a path against them. The government has to decide which path it intends to take.”
