Senior Union Backs Merz; Calls for Immediate Pension Reform Implementation

Hubert Hüppe, chairman of the Seniors’ Union (CDU), views Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz as a reliable partner for older citizens across Germany. When questioned by the “Rheinische Post” about whether he feels well represented by the 70-year-old Merz, Hüppe responded, “The Chancellor is from our age group. And what does ‘oldie’ really mean? But yes, clearly: he is our man.”

Hüppe went on to assert that seniors form the backbone of democracy, citing the clear votes cast for the democratic center as confirmation.

Regarding the upcoming pension reform, Hüppe stressed that the discussion must focus on the coalition as a whole, not just the Chancellor. He expects not only from Merz but from every member of the coalition to avoid entrenched opposition and hard-line counter-proposals. Should the decision be made to form a commission, Hüppe believes the outcome must be given due weight, arguing that it is now critically necessary to implement as much of the commission’s proposals as possible. The pressure surrounding the pension debate is intense, and the older generation is now demanding substantive reforms.
