CDU politician Roderich Kiesewetter has sharply criticized the Iran deal, arguing that it represents a disaster and amounts to “unprecedented treason” against the Iranian people. Speaking to the news portal T-Online, Kiesewetter argued that the deal would only reward the terror of the regime and stated that while former President Trump had promised aid to the Iranian population, he was instead strengthening the terror regime with billions in funding and sanction relief. According to Kiesewetter, the United States is completely ignoring Israel’s central goal: achieving regime change as a historic opportunity for peace in the Middle East.
Kiesewetter demanded immediate action, calling for Germany to deploy naval minesweepers to the Strait of Hormuz to safeguard free commercial navigation. He noted that a German ship is already in the Mediterranean and could be rapidly redeployed. He further asserted that if the United States, under Trump, were to be easily pressured, Europe must demonstrate its own strength to defend the rule-based international order and open sea routes, which are vital for Germany as an export nation. He stressed that “the days of restraining ourselves, looking away, and writing checks” are definitively over.
In contrast, Jürgen Hardt, the CDU/CSU’s speaker for foreign policy, welcomed the deal. Hardt told T-Online that the agreement was a crucial first step and good news for the German economy. However, he added that the future depended on the “seriousness of the Mullah regime,” stating that Tehran must reconsider its regional role. He cautioned that the ceasefire arrangement was not an opportunity to allow Hamas, Hezbollah, and others to attack Israel again.
Regarding potential German support, Hardt mentioned that the G7 nations were currently outlining how they envision participation. He confirmed that Germany is prepared to assume responsibility for guaranteeing free passage through the Strait of Hormuz within the framework of the peace agreement.
