Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz (CDU) expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the G7 summit held in France. Speaking in Évian-les-Bains on Wednesday, he concluded that the meeting “proved worthwhile in multiple respects” and assessed the overall results positively.
He noted the creation of closer cooperation formats among the leaders, particularly regarding critical raw materials and artificial intelligence. Addressing the AI discussion specifically, Merz mentioned that the topic would be further debated with tech companies during the luncheon. However, he stressed that geopolitics and global power imbalances remained the defining themes of the summit.
Merz highlighted the joint declaration issued by the leaders concerning Iran and Ukraine. He described this agreement as a significant achievement, stating, “It was difficult work, but it paid off, because it is the first time ever since President Trump took office that we issue a joint statement and find a common language on the major security questions of our time at a G7 summit.” He called this outcome “a real success.”
Furthermore, Merz observed that the level of support for Ukraine from the G7 circle was stronger than it had been in recent times. He confirmed that all G7 partners would increase pressure on Moscow, including through sanctions. For Merz, this development “sets a new standard for transatlantic unity and resolve.”
