Grüne Leader Slams Trump Iran Deal and Calls for Independent European Defense Union

Franziska Brantner, the leader of the Green Party, has sharply criticized the deal signed between the United States and Iran. Speaking on Thursday to RTL and ntv, she aggressively challenged the Chancellor Merz (CDU) for framing the agreement as a success. While acknowledging that the cessation of hostilities is positive, Brantner stressed, “It is absurd that Chancellor Merz is celebrating this as a success.” She argued that a war instigated by Trump has ended, and in doing so, the West has overall been left in a weaker position than before the conflict began.

The Green Party chief specifically rejected congratulations directed toward the US President, stating that there is also no reason to cheer or offer gratitude to him now. Instead of what she calls “denial of reality,” she insists that Chancellor Merz must start acting consistently in a European manner.

Brantner also took issue with how the G7 summit was oriented around Trump’s wishes, accusing the federal government of lacking strategic independence. Voicing strong disapproval of Germany’s role in such a context, she called for “truly consistent European action” as an alternative, coupled with the creation of a European defense union. She argued that Europe cannot constantly be dependent on the whims of a president like Trump, insisting that this must happen independently of the United States, though she concedes, “This won’t happen overnight. We must start now.”
