Hormuz Strait Vital for German Energy Security, Says CDU Spokesman; Calls for International Military Support

Jürgen Hardt, the foreign policy spokesperson for the CDU parliamentary group, stated that the free passage through the Strait of Hormuz is strategically crucial both for Germany and the global economy. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Hardt emphasized that securing energy stability and maintaining low world market prices are in Germany’s interest. He argued that this security is worth protecting, and suggested that if necessary, this protection could involve military means alongside partners. He further noted that Germany’s capability in mine countermeasures might be needed, in coordination with other nations, adhering to international law and the Basic Law, to clear any existing mines. Hardt also stressed that maintaining peace in the region aligns with German and European interests. Concurrently, however, Hardt cautioned against having overly high expectations regarding recent agreements between the United States and Iran. He described the current understanding as “still rather vague” and needing time to prove itself. He concluded that the situation’s progression will become clearer in the coming days and weeks.
