Sahra Wagenknecht, a founder of BSW, has publicly proposed replacing the current Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt, Sven Schulze (CDU), with an independent figure selected outside the traditional party structure. Speaking to the “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung”, she stated that the new head of government should possess considerable experience in leading large organizations, although she added that this experience should not necessitate a political career. Furthermore, she argued that those who succeed within the power struggles of established parties are often not the best suited for the role.
When pressed on why she declined to name a specific candidate, Wagenknecht explained that she prefers to define the political content a supported candidate must uphold. She noted that unlike the other parties, the true political aims of a candidate from those groups often remain unclear until after an election.
Wagenknecht also advocated for integrating the AfD into the next state government, asserting that a party with 40 percent of the vote cannot simply be excluded. She maintained that she has never objected to granting the AfD chair positions or similar roles if their popularity warrants it. However, she concluded by warning that if her proposal for an impartial minister-president fails to gain support, the BSW will abstain from voting, even if that results in a minority government led by the AfD.
