Nationwide Rail Chaos: Communication Failure Halts Train Services Across Germany

Significant nationwide disruptions have occurred across the railway network due to a failure in the train radio communication system. This issue, reported by several operators including S-Bahn Munich, S-Bahn Berlin, Metronom, and Erixx on Tuesday evening, has resulted in extensive service limitations.

The S-Bahn Munich network is experiencing partial outages and delays of up to 30 minutes. Meanwhile, Metronom has announced that, for safety reasons, all trains have been forced to stop or arrive at the nearest station where they remain. According to Metronom, all routes and train connections are currently affected by the incident.

The service interruptions are leading to considerable delays, numerous cancellations, and sudden changes to the timetables. Metronom has not yet provided an estimated time for when normal rail traffic can be resumed.

The railway company Erixx is advising the public against making journeys and instead suggests utilizing alternative travel options, noting that a stable resumption of services is not expected on Tuesday.

The root cause of the GSM-R radio system failure remains unclear. Normally, the P-GSM system is designed to ensure secure communication between trains and dispatch controllers in the event of a GSM-R malfunction.
