Mixed Signals in Construction: Order Intake Stagnates Amid Infrastructure Surge

Order intake in the construction main trades has recently shown stagnation. According to figures released on Thursday, the relevant value remained unchanged in April compared to March when adjusted for calendar and seasonal variations. Data from the Federal Statistical Office indicates that order intake in construction (High-Rise/Buildings) decreased by 6.7 percent, while order intake in civil engineering (Low-Rise/Infrastructure) increased by 6.5 percent.

When comparing the less volatile three-month period, the calendar- and season-adjusted order intake from February to April was 0.4 percent higher than during the previous three months (with High-Rise construction increasing by 2.4 percent and civil engineering decreasing by 1.3 percent). Furthermore, when comparing against April of the previous year, the real, calendar-adjusted order intake in the construction main trades grew by 0.6 percent in April. In this yearly comparison, order intake in High-Rise construction fell by 6.5 percent, while civil engineering increased by 7.4 percent. The nominal, or unadjusted, order intake was 3.6 percent above the previous year’s value.

Regarding financial performance, real revenue in the construction main trades increased by 3.6 percent in April compared to the same month last year. Nominal revenue saw a rise of 6.3 percent during the same period, reaching 10.0 billion euros. Finally, the Federal Statistical Office reported that the number of people employed in the construction main trades increased by 1.4 percent in April compared to the previous year, rising to approximately 545,000 people.
