Reddig Pushes For Urgent Cabinet Decision on Comprehensive Pension Reform Before Summer Break

CDU Member of Parliament Pascal Reddig is urgently calling for a cabinet decision regarding the timetable for pension reform before the summer break begins in two weeks. Speaking to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, Reddig emphasized the necessity of immediate action, stating, “It has to happen as quickly as possible.” He argued that a reform package of this nature should have been passed 10 or 15 years ago to stabilize the system, warning that “we cannot afford to lose any more time.”

His proposed strategy involves establishing a binding schedule within the cabinet before the summer pause. This would allow time to draft the necessary legislative bills throughout the summer. He believes the framework could then be debated in the Bundestag during the autumn and potentially finalized by the end of the year. While the process is laid out, Reddig stressed that the crucial element is whether there is sufficient political will to push it through.

Furthermore, Reddig advocated for passing all components of the pension reform within a single, large legislative package. He cautioned against tackling reforms piecemeal, insisting that the concept should be represented in its entirety within one cohesive law.

Currently, the leadership of both the Union and the SPD are scheduled to discuss the timeline for the planned pension reform at the Coalition Committee on Wednesday. While the Union is stressing the need for speed, the SPD is appearing more inclined toward caution, suggesting that implementation should not be rushed. The question of whether the coalition partners want to implement the plans as one grand package or in several phases remains open, and differences of opinion persist even concerning specific recommendations made by the pension commission.
