CDU Shifts Focus: Social Security Stability Must Precede Income Tax Relief for Working Class

Deputy CDU parliamentary group chairman Sepp Müller has cautioned against demanding an immediate overhaul of the income tax system, insisting that stabilizing social security contributions must take precedence. According to the CDU politician, securing the stability of social insurance payments is the most direct way to ensure that people with lower earnings see a noticeable increase in their net income relative to their gross income.

Müller stressed that any conversation about further income tax relief could only happen if there is financial room left over after these prior stabilization efforts are addressed. He argued that hard work deserves to be rewarded. Should sufficient “financial leeway” remain, he expressed his desire for a reduction in income tax, characterizing it as the “tax of the middle class.” Such a reduction, he added, would benefit industrious families and small businesses.

His position presents a notable contrast to that of Lars Klingbeil (SPD), the Finance Minister, who is pushing for additional reductions to assist small and medium-income earners. Currently, the coalition partners are engaged in discussions regarding how to finance any potential income tax reform.
