Microsoft is expanding its data center ambitions in North Rhine-Westphalia, with the company planning to build an additional site in Grevenbroich in the Lower Rhine region. This expansion was confirmed by Microsoft Manager Ansgar Baums during a conference organized by the “Handelsblatt” on Wednesday.
This development further strengthens Microsoft’s project footprint in the Rheinic area. Previously, Satya Nadella had announced data centers in Bergheim, Bedburg, and Elsdorf. Originally, Microsoft had committed an investment of €3.2 billion to these facilities, marking the largest single investment the company had planned in Germany.
According to the “Handelsblatt”, citing sources within the company, the total investment volume is expected to grow further with the addition of the fourth data center. While Microsoft has not provided specific figures regarding the new investment, industry experts estimate the construction costs for such new facilities to be in the hundreds of millions of euros. The corporation justified the continued expansion by citing extremely high market demand.
Agnes Heftberger, the company’s head in Germany, emphasized that this growth not only means increased investment in local infrastructure but also directly benefits the people who live and work in the area.
